Key 3 – Create Safety, Trust, & Belonging

The third key to achieving respectful cooperation with children is pretty simple. Kids need physical and emotional safety to develop properly. A few quotes from Sura Hart & Victoria Kindle Hodson in their book, Respectful Parents Respectful Kids, 2006, PuddleDancer Press, Encinitas, CA should get the point across.

“Your kids require you most of all to love them for who they are, not to spend your whole time trying to correct them.”
Bill Ayers, American Elementary Education Theorist (1944- )

“I never met a person whose greatest need was anything other than real, unconditional love.”
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Swiss Psychiatrist, Author (1926-2004)

“It’s an open question whether any behaviour based on fear of eternal punishment can be regarded as ethical or should be regarded as merely cowardly.”
Margaret Mead, American Cultural Anthropologist, Writer, Speaker (1901-1978)
